This section holds random bits of information which may prove useful for birding in Lady Bay and beyond. All of the information is based purely on personal experience and opinion.

  1. Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

The official recorders of the birds of Nottinghamshire. See their website –

Lots of great information on sites, maps, records etc. Only £14/year to join and well worth the money.

As Recorder for Nottingamshire, I submit records to them on behalf of Lady Bay Birdwatchers.

2. Local Groups

  • Lady Bay Community Association – see their website for full details of what’s going on in the area
  • Friends of The Hook – doing great work in developing The Hook’s environment

3. Books

If you haven’t got a Field Guide for Britain and Europe this is the one:

Collins Field Guide – by Svensson, Mullarney and Zetterstrom

It can be downloaded as an APP – many advantages inc songs, calls, maps etc. Cost about £15. Worth every penny

Note : it doesn’t have ALL of the species calls etc

4. Optical Equipment

The choice of optical equipment is very much a personal matter as there are so many aspects to consider eg cost, weight, size, field of view etc etc.

Attenborough Nature Reserve – Opticron and other makes. Often have ‘come and try’ sessions.

Focus Optics, Coventry – Church Lane, Corley, CV7 8BA

A great place to try out optics with viewing over their own woodland and water features. Endless patience with customers. Lots of different makes, price ranges etc but do tend to be at the upper end of the scale. Take your time. Good lunch spots nearby!

Cley Spy, North Norfolk. 9 Manor Farm Barns, Glandford, Holt NR25 7JP

Bought my Swarovskis from here – brilliant.
